Voorwoord

De overeenkomsten voor het merendeel van de software zijn opgezet om de vrijheid van de gebruiker in te perken. Bij de GNU GPL is dit andersom: je hebt de vrijheid om de software weg te geven en aan te passen aan je eigen behoeftes. Om er zker van te zijn dat de software vrij is voor alle gebruikers. Deze algemene openbare vergunning (GPL) heeft betrekking op het merendeel van wat uitgegeven is door de 'Free Software Foundation' en op alles wat uitgegeven is door derden die zich bij deze GPL hebben aangesloten. iedereen kan de GNU GPL adopteren voor zijn eigen producten.
Een deel van de software die uitgegeven wordt door de 'Free Software Foundation' maakt gebruik van de GNU LGPL.

Als we het over vrije software hebben, dan bedoelen we daarmee vrijheid en niet gratis. Onze GPL is ontworpen om de gebruiker de vrijheid te geven om vrije software te verspreiden (en daar een vergoeding voor te vragen als je dat wilt). En dat je de beschikking kunt hebben over de broncode. En dat ke de software (of delen daarvan) kunt wijzigen naar eigen goeddunken. Verder wordt ieder vrij programma constant bedreigd door software patenten. Wij willen voorkomen dat herverdelers van vrije software individueel dergelijke software patenten bemachtigen waardoor de voorheen vrije software ineens onvrij zou worden. Om dit te voorkomen maken we iedereen duidelijk dat je een software patent mag claimen op basis van de broncode van vrije software, alleen het mag niet op naam van 1 persoon komen. De iegnaar van het gergelijk patent is dan de hele mensheid.

De precieze voorwaarden voor copieren, verspreiden en aanpassen volgen hieronder.
